What is an Enhanced Clinical Practitioner?

Enhanced Clinical Practitioners provide a high-level of specialist care to their patients using their advanced skills, clinical judgement and knowledge. As an Enhanced Clinical Practitioner you would need to consult with patients, their families and colleagues to devise a suitable care-plan. You must do this whilst taking into account multiple complex factors.

Enhanced Clinical Practitioners work within a specific aspect of a patients care. People in this role often work as part of a multi-disciplinary team across multiple different locations; from GP’s surgeries to hospitals. With additional training, these specialist areas can result in job titles such as a Dietitian, Enhanced dental technician and Registered nurse – to mention but a few.

Enhanced Clinical Practitioners often take on additional responsibilities, such as taking part in clinical audits and research projects. As an Enhanced Clinical Practitioner, you may also need to update guidelines and procedures. In addition to this, Enhanced Clinical Practitioners also have leadership roles within teams. It is also important that they keep their own knowledge current and up to date.

Details of the Enhanced Clinical Practitioner Apprenticeship:

Duration: 18 months + end point assessment (EPA) period (typically 3 months)

Qualification: Level 6 – Enhanced Clinical Practitioner

Maximum funding: £7000

How is the apprenticeship assessed?

The assessment method has 2 components.

  • An independent assessor assesses and marks a 5000 word quality improvement proposal report.
  • A question and answer session with the apprentice to clarify what they have assessed from the report.

  • You must be registered with either Social Work England, or an accredited voluntary registrar.
  • Level 2 English and Maths or equivalent British Sign Language (BSL) qualification.
  • Typically, people undertake post-registration education within a relevant area of study prior to the apprenticeship.

Key responsibilities of an Enhanced Clinical Practitioner:

  • Keeping your knowledge up-to-date and current.
  • Evaluating and analysing complex medical situations to determine the best course of care for the patient. This will include taking into account the patient’s personal requirements such as cultural, social and belief systems.
  • Providing an enhanced level of care for people with complex care needs. You must use your knowledge and be able to do so whilst in various environments, such as patients’ homes, or hospitals.
  • Working as part of a larger team as well as individually to deliver care in the context of the modern landscape. Be that in terms of changing and challenging environments, new models of care delivery or an aging and diverse population.
  • Having empathy whilst being able to deal with emotionally charged situations. For example speaking to members of the patient’s family to guide them as to how to handle the situation.
  • The ability to be in a leadership role within a clinical team. Be it dividing responsibilities or taking accountability for those delegated responsibilities.
  • Maintaining an awareness of your own health and well-being whilst providing support for others where needed.
