Overview of the role

Within a Policy Officer apprenticeship role, you will help to shape and influence public policy. This involves improvements to the health, welfare and prosperity of all citizens. You will research and analyse data and then use your findings to advise on various issues.

Responsibilities of a policy officer apprentice:

  • undertake research
  • gather and analyse data and information
  • keep up to date with social, political and economic developments
  • provide advice to senior managers, stakeholders and decision makers
  • support or coordinate meetings, sometimes including diary management
  • write briefings, reports, and speeches
  • carry out consultations with internal and external stakeholders – including colleagues, customers, or members of the public
  • work with a range of people and organisations, including senior managers, public office officials and members of the public

Types of policy work:

Local and government = involve advising senior or elected officials eg. MPs.

Charities and think tanks = involves campaigning, communications and public affairs.

Public and private sector = developing the policies that an organisiation requires to run effectively

Policy Officer skills:

  • good written and verbal communication skills
  • interpersonal skills, to work and build relationships with a range of people
  • the ability to understand diverse perspectives and to be able to successfully influence
  • effective research and analysis skills
